Function / Content

This series consists of 'Alleviation of distress' files covering all regions of the Northern Territory including Darwin, Borroloola, Croker Island, Tiwi Islands, Batchelor, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. The files record the provision of the following welfare services; provision and assessment of child maintenance, emergency assistance relating to accommodation and food, assistance relating to housing including payments for legal representation in eviction proceedings brought against clients by Housing Commission and payment of rental arrears, investigations for interstate and Northern Territory affiliation proceedings, and assistance to clients to purchase furniture and clothing. Welfare also provided services to clients in conjunction with the Department of Health including adoptions and foster care, spectacles for the elderly, repatriation of clients (including elderly people in need of care and people assessed as being alcoholics) to other states and institutions outside the Northern Territory, and arrangements for people assessed as mental defectives to receive treatments interstate. Clients included children who were classed as State Children, wards, neglected children placed under the guardianship of the Director, Welfare Branch; people released from prison; unwed mothers; New Australians (immigrants from Greece and Italy); deserted wives and children.
